China 90 LineHand KnottedRug

Beige / Dark red52 x 85 cm

Chinese rug weaving is a tradition with a deep and complex history, dating back centuries. While early pieces were often made for imperial use or religious ceremony, the industry evolved significantly in the 20th century, blending traditional artistic motifs with modern manufacturing techniques to reach a global audience.

The term '90 line' refers to a traditional system used to measure the density of the weave in Chinese rugs. It indicates the number of knots along a specific width, which directly influences the sharpness of the patterns and the overall durability of the pile. This technical precision is what allows for the detailed floral curves and organic shapes seen in this specific piece.

Chinese rugs are famous for their distinct use of negative space and sculptural pile. Unlike many other traditions that fill every inch of the field with pattern, these rugs often use a central medallion or asymmetrical floral elements to create a sense of balance and calm. The motifs are often deeply symbolic, drawing on centuries of Chinese art and nature imagery.

Today, these rugs are highly valued by collectors for their unique aesthetic and the level of hand-crafting involved. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage, representing a bridge between ancient artistic techniques and the needs of a contemporary home.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires significant skill and patience. Each individual knot is tied by hand onto the foundation, ensuring the pile is held securely in place and providing the rug with its signature density and structural integrity.

With a foundation crafted from sturdy Cotton, the rug is built to last. The meticulous nature of the hand-knotting process means that the pattern definition is crisp and clear, allowing the intricate floral motifs to stand out with precision and depth.

Given the artisanal nature of this piece, its creation involves months of focused effort by experienced weavers. The weight of 2.7 kg across its compact size is a testament to the density of the construction and the quality of the materials used, ensuring a durable floor covering that is built to serve your home for generations.
