Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner79 x 211 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, which historically served as a major trading hub for nomadic and village weavers. Over generations, weavers migrated and brought these time-honoured designs to Pakistan, where the tradition found a new home and evolved to reach new levels of refined execution.

The designation 3ply refers to the construction of the pile yarn, which is spun by twisting three individual strands of wool together before knotting. This technique produces a significantly denser, more lustrous, and longer-lasting pile compared to single-ply yarns, ensuring the rug handles everyday wear with grace.

Visually, Bokhara rugs are celebrated for their distinctive repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat rows across the field. These central motifs are framed by precise geometric borders that give the design a balanced and harmonious structure.

Rugs from this storied tradition are highly valued by collectors and interior lovers alike for their cultural depth and lasting quality. Owning a traditional Pakistan Bokhara means holding a tangible piece of textile heritage that honors centuries of skilled handcraft.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who tie each knot individually onto the foundation. A rug of this size with a density of 160,000 knots per m2 requires months of focused, dedicated human labor.

Weighing 5.2 kg, the heavy and robust construction demonstrates the generous amount of natural wool invested in the piece. This density of materials and labor results in a sturdy, long-lasting floor covering designed to withstand everyday life.

The precision of hand knotting ensures that the wool pile remains dense and resilient over time. Every single knot contributes to the structural integrity and rich surface texture that machines simply cannot replicate.
