Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red173 x 244 cm

Bokhara rugs trace their design roots back along the ancient Silk Road, taking their name from the historic Central Asian trading hub of Bukhara. While the geometric vocabulary originated with nomadic tribes in the region, the fine art of weaving these classic carpets migrated over centuries, with Pakistan developing into a renowned centre for producing exceptional examples.

The 3ply designation in the name refers to the specific preparation of the wool yarn, where three separate strands are twisted together before knotting. This multi-strand construction yields a thicker, heavier, and more lustrous pile than standard single-ply yarns, offering enhanced durability and a richer surface texture.

The visual language of this tradition is defined by its repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal medallions arranged in orderly rows across the field. Enclosed by formal geometric borders, these characteristic motifs give the rug its balanced appearance and enduring visual appeal.

Collecting rugs from this lineage connects your home to a long-standing tradition of skilled craftsmanship and regional heritage. Owning such a piece means preserving a tangible link to ancient textile arts, valued for both their cultural depth and their ability to endure for generations.

This handmade rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of careful labor to complete a single piece. The makers tie each individual knot by hand, building the thick wool pile strand by strand with remarkable precision.

Measuring 244 x 173 cm and weighing 13.1 kg, this rug contains approximately 1,055,000 individual knots. Achieving this level of density requires immense human effort, focus, and traditional expertise passed down through generations.

This intensive hand-knotting process results in a robust foundation and a tightly packed pile that secures the wool fibers firmly in place. The time and meticulous skill invested in its creation ensure a level of structural integrity and lasting quality that machines simply cannot replicate.
