Bokhara 3plyHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark yellow167 x 230 cm

Bokhara rugs take their evocative name from the ancient Silk Road trading post of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers once gathered. Over centuries, these distinctive designs travelled alongside migrating tribes and settled into thriving weaving communities in Pakistan, where local artisans perfected the craft while staying true to the timeless visual language of their ancestors.

The 3ply designation in this rug refers to the construction of the pile yarn, which is spun by twisting three individual strands of wool together before weaving. This multi-ply technique creates a noticeably thicker, stronger, and more lustrous pile compared to simpler single-strand alternatives, ensuring the rug stands up to daily wear while maintaining its inviting softness.

At the heart of the design tradition are repeating gul motifs, which are traditional octagonal medallions arranged in neat rows across the field. In this particular piece, the classic motifs are set against an unusual green background, offering a refreshing variation on the traditional deep red tones while retaining the formal borders and geometric precision characteristic of the style.

Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara means acquiring a piece of living textile history that connects modern interiors with centuries of craft tradition. Collectors and design enthusiasts prize these rugs for their enduring quality, cultural depth, and the human story woven into every single square centimetre.

This hand-knotted rug represents hundreds of hours of dedicated craft by skilled artisans in Pakistan. Every single knot is tied meticulously by hand, a traditional method that requires immense patience, steady hands, and deep generational expertise.

With a knot density of 250,000 knots per m2 spread across the generous 230 x 167 cm dimensions, artisans hand-placed approximately 960,000 individual knots. Completing a work of this scale and density takes several months of daily, careful labour.

This intensive manual process ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that machines simply cannot achieve. The substantial 11.9 kg total weight reflects the generous amount of natural wool and dense foundation packed into every square metre, resulting in a lasting piece built for daily life.
