Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black93 x 154 cm

Bokhara rugs are deeply rooted in the traditions of Central Asia, taking their name from the historic Silk Road city of Bukhara. While they originated among nomadic tribes, the finest examples today are meticulously crafted in Pakistan, where the tradition has been preserved and refined over generations.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of Wool are twisted together before being knotted. This method is highly valued because it creates a thicker, more lustrous, and remarkably durable surface that feels exceptionally plush and stands the test of time better than single-strand yarn.

Visually, these rugs are defined by the repeating gul motif, which often appears as octagonal or elephant-foot shapes arranged in orderly rows. This rug honours that classic design language while showcasing the unique variations that naturally occur when a master weaver brings their own perspective to the traditional layout.

Collecting these rugs is an investment in cultural heritage and skilled artistry. They are prized not only for their aesthetic beauty but also for the story they tell of ancient weaving techniques that have been passed down through centuries, connecting your modern home to a rich, global history of craft.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each knot, the weaver ensures a level of structural integrity and density that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

Given the density of 250,000 knots per m2, creating this piece is a labour-intensive journey that takes months of focused effort. This high knot density is the secret behind the rug's fine pattern definition and its ability to maintain a luxurious, full pile that will stand up to years of use.

The weight of 3.7 kg across its 1.43 m2 size is a testament to the generous amount of high-quality Wool used in its construction. This substantial material weight, combined with the rigorous knotting technique, results in a rug that is both sturdy and exceptionally soft, justifying the time and care invested in its creation.
