Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BrownRunner79 x 308 cm

Bokhara rugs trace their design roots back along the ancient Silk Road to the historic Central Asian city of Bukhara, though the finest examples today are woven across Pakistan. Over generations, migrant weavers carried these distinct patterns across borders, adapting and refining the technique while preserving its core aesthetic identity.

The designation 2ply indicates that the pile is spun using two distinct strands of wool twisted together before knotting, which produces a notably denser and more lustrous surface than single-ply alternatives. This traditional twisting method reinforces the wool fibers, helping the rug resist wear and retain its rich appearance over time.

Signature Bokhara design elements include repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in orderly rows across a rich field, framed by geometric borders. The deep dark-red background used here is the hallmark of the tradition, lending a grounded, traditional look to the repeated motifs.

Rugs from this lineage are valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their cultural continuity and the immense skill required to produce them. Owning a piece like this represents a connection to centuries of textile heritage, celebrating human craftsmanship over mass production.

This runner is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who spend months meticulously tying individual knots to bring the intricate pattern to life. Weighing 6.1 kg across a size of 308 x 79 cm, the construction contains a dense mass of materials that points to the immense physical labor invested.

With approximately 600,000 individual knots placed by hand across the entire rug, the creation process demands absolute precision and patience. This careful method results in a remarkably sturdy structure with a firm, heavy drape that lies flat and secure on the floor.

The considerable time required to complete a piece of this density reflects a dedication to traditional craft that ensures long-lasting resilience. Every square metre represents hours of concentrated handwork, producing a finished rug built to withstand generations of regular use.
