Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black78 x 123 cm

Bokhara rugs trace their design roots back along the ancient Silk Road, taking their name from the historic Central Asian trading hub of Bukhara. While the design heritage originated among nomadic tribes, expert weaving traditions later flourished in Pakistan, where artisans refined these classic motifs into the pieces known today.

The 2ply designation refers to the construction of the pile, where two individual strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This two-ply technique produces a denser, stronger, and more lustrous yarn that withstands everyday wear far better than single-ply alternatives.

Visually, traditional Bokhara rugs are known for their orderly rows of repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal medallions symbolizing tribal heritage and family crests. Framed by geometric borders, these characteristic patterns create a balanced and familiar visual rhythm.

Owning a Bokhara rug means welcoming a piece of living craft history into your home. The enduring appeal of these patterns combined with genuine artisan skill makes each rug a valued addition for anyone who appreciates traditional textile arts.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who tie each knot individually onto the foundation. Creating a rug of this size with a density of 160,000 knots per m2 requires months of dedicated human labor and precise attention to detail.

Weighing 2.4 kg across its 123 x 78 cm dimensions, the substantial weight reflects the heavy density of the wool and the tight construction beneath the surface. This intensive manual process ensures a sturdy, well-bound structure that stands up to daily life.

The patient, hands-on weaving technique allows for crisp pattern definition and a thick, supportive pile that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.
