Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Brown76 x 122 cm

Bokhara rugs take their iconic name from the ancient Silk Road trading hub of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and village weavers first developed the distinctive design traditions. Over generations, these patterns migrated across borders, finding a thriving home in Pakistan where local artisans refined the craft to an exceptional standard of quality.

The 2ply designation refers to the construction of the pile, which is woven using two strands of wool twisted together before knotting. This technique produces a denser, more lustrous, and longer-lasting surface compared to single-ply variations, offering both enhanced visual depth and everyday resilience.

Visually, this tradition is defined by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows across the field. Enclosed by structured geometric borders, these motifs reflect a deep heritage of symmetry and symbolic storytelling passed down through generations of weavers.

Collecting a rug from this storied tradition means welcoming a piece of living cultural heritage into your home. The skill and patience required to knot each piece by hand ensure that these textiles carry forward centuries of artisanal knowledge, offering lasting value that goes far beyond a simple floor covering.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans who spend months carefully tying each individual knot by hand. With a total count of approximately 148,480 knots across its 122 x 76 cm surface, the creation of this piece represents a significant investment of human time and traditional expertise.

Weighing 2.3 kg, the substantial construction reflects the generous amount of natural wool and dense packing required to build such a durable foundation. This meticulous hand-weaving method ensures the pile remains secure and tight, providing the kind of structural integrity that only traditional craftsmanship can achieve.
