Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Green / Dark green245 x 311 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a historical hub for trade and textile artistry. While the design roots are deeply embedded in the nomadic traditions of the region, the finest examples today are primarily crafted in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving techniques across generations, where the original tribal aesthetic was refined into the sophisticated styles we admire today.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technical choice is significant because it results in a denser, more lustrous, and longer-lasting pile compared to single-ply alternatives. It provides the rug with a superior handle and a resilience that allows it to maintain its appearance even in high-traffic areas of the home.

The signature design element of this tradition is the repeating gul motif, which are octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows across the field. These motifs are often framed by ornate, multiple-band borders that provide a formal structure to the composition. The use of a green field is a beautiful, less common variation that highlights the intricate details of the internal patterns.

Rugs from this tradition are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts for their blend of cultural heritage and technical skill. Owning a piece like this is more than just a decor choice; it is an appreciation of a craft that has been passed down through centuries. It represents a commitment to lasting quality and a celebration of the human touch that no machine can replicate.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 311 x 245 cm rug involves roughly 190,000 individual knots. This extensive effort ensures a robust foundation and a pile density that is both resilient and satisfyingly soft.

The weight of 19 kg is a testament to the quality and volume of material used in its construction. Every knot is placed by hand, a labour-intensive method that allows for the intricate definition of the geometric motifs. This commitment to traditional craft not only guarantees the rug's durability but also ensures that the final piece is a testament to the artisan's skill and dedication.
