Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black245 x 257 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, a historic hub for trade and craftsmanship in Central Asia. While the name is steeped in this legendary geography, the finest examples today are primarily woven in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving families and the adaptation of traditional techniques to new markets.

The '2ply' designation refers to the construction of the wool pile, where two strands are twisted together before being knotted into the rug. This specific technique results in a pile that is not only denser and more lustrous but also significantly more durable. It creates a surface that is both soft to the touch and resistant to the wear of daily life.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara style include the repeating 'gul' motifs, which are stylized, octagonal elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat, formal rows. These are typically enclosed by intricate, multi-layered borders that frame the field. This disciplined, geometric language is balanced by the rich, saturated colour palette that defines the tradition.

These rugs are deeply valued by collectors and homeowners alike because they represent a living bridge to an ancient craft. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and human skill. It is a testament to the idea that a floor covering can be both a functional object and an enduring work of artistic expression.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires immense patience and precision. By individually tying each knot onto a sturdy foundation, the weavers ensure a rug that is both dense and durable. The 250.000 knots per m2 create a refined surface that allows for the crisp, clean execution of the intricate repeating motifs.

The creation of this square rug involves thousands of hours of focused human effort. A rug of this size and density represents a significant investment of time and expertise, as the artisan must maintain consistent tension and accuracy throughout the entire project. This rigorous attention to detail is what gives the rug its exceptional structural integrity.

Weighing 15.7 kg and featuring a generous 11 mm pile, this rug demonstrates the quality of materials and the density of its construction. This weight is a direct result of the high concentration of premium wool used, ensuring a substantial feel that stays firmly in place while providing lasting support for your floors.
