Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Orange243 x 247 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the historic Silk Road city of Bukhara in Central Asia, a legendary hub where trade and culture flourished for centuries. While the name is tied to this ancient city, the finest examples of these rugs today are crafted in Pakistan, where artisans have perfected the style to meet modern standards of quality and design.

The '2ply' designation refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is significant because it creates a pile that is thicker, more lustrous, and noticeably more durable than rugs made with single-ply yarn, ensuring the rug holds up beautifully underfoot.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara tradition include the repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot shaped medallions arranged in precise rows. These are typically enclosed by a formal, decorative border that grounds the design. This particular rug features a clean, neutral field that highlights the intricate geometric patterns in a sophisticated way.

Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara is an investment in a living tradition. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their combination of heritage, technical skill, and lasting beauty. By bringing one into your home, you are acquiring a piece of cultural history that has been crafted with the intent of outlasting passing trends.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, a process that requires immense patience and precision. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the construction of this 247 x 243 cm piece represents roughly 1.5 million individually tied knots, a labour-intensive effort that ensures the pile remains dense, resilient, and luxurious for generations.

The quality of this rug is further evidenced by its substantial weight of 15 kg, which speaks to the high volume of wool used in its creation. This density not only gives the rug a solid, premium feel but also contributes to its structural integrity, ensuring it lies flat and maintains its shape even with daily use.
