Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Green / Dark yellow240 x 240 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of the Silk Road, taking its name from the ancient city of Bukhara in Central Asia. While these designs have historical origins in the nomadic tribes of the region, the finest examples today are primarily crafted in Pakistan. This evolution reflects the migration of weaving techniques and the continued dedication of artisans to preserving and refining these classic patterns.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the yarn, where two strands of Wool are twisted together before being used in the pile. This technique is significant because it creates a yarn that is more robust, lustrous, and durable than single-ply alternatives. For the owner, this means a rug that not only looks more vibrant but also stands up better to the demands of daily life, maintaining its soft feel and appearance for longer.

Signature design elements of the Bokhara style include the repeating gul motifs, which are stylized, octagonal shapes often compared to elephant footprints. These are typically arranged in clean, geometric rows across the field, framed by a wide, detailed border that balances the central design. The green palette of this specific piece offers a unique and refreshing departure from the more traditional deep reds often associated with this style.

Rugs from this tradition are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their blend of historical significance and enduring quality. Owning a hand-knotted Bokhara represents a commitment to traditional skill and an appreciation for items that are crafted with care. It is an acquisition that brings a sense of cultural depth to a home, serving as a reminder of the generations of weavers who have perfected this craft over centuries.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. Using a traditional technique, each individual knot is tied by hand onto a sturdy cotton foundation. This labour-intensive process is what allows for such a high level of detail in the pattern and ensures the rug maintains its structural integrity over time.

The quality of this rug is evidenced by its construction, featuring 250,000 knots per m2. With a total size of 240 x 240 cm, this equates to approximately 14.4 million hand-tied knots, representing an extraordinary investment of human skill and patience. This density is the reason the rug feels so substantial and holds its shape and beauty so effectively.

The weight of 14.4 kg is a testament to the generous amount of Wool used in the pile and the tightness of the weave. A heavier, denser rug like this one provides a more luxurious feel and superior long-term performance compared to less densely constructed alternatives. It is a piece built not just for today, but to endure as a lasting element of your home.
