Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black200 x 209 cm

The Bokhara tradition finds its historical roots in the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, which served as a vital hub for trade and cultural exchange in Central Asia. Over generations, the techniques and aesthetics of these rugs migrated, with Pakistan eventually becoming the premier centre for producing the finest examples of this style today.

The '2ply' designation refers to the specific way the wool is prepared for the loom. By twisting two strands of wool together before knotting, the artisans create a pile that is significantly more lustrous, dense, and durable than single-ply alternatives. This technical choice is what gives these rugs their characteristic soft sheen and long-lasting quality.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their field of repeating 'gul' motifs. These octagonal or elephant-foot medallions are arranged in precise rows, representing a long tradition of geometric order. This particular piece adheres to that classic layout, framed by a formal, intricate border that adds structure and depth to the overall design.

Owning a Bokhara rug is an investment in a storied craft tradition that values skill, patience, and cultural continuity. Collectors prize these rugs not just for their aesthetic appeal, but for the human story embedded in every knot, representing a standard of excellence that remains a benchmark in the world of fine rugs.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the sheer volume of work involved is immense, ensuring that the finished product is not only visually striking but also structurally sound.

The process relies on the artisan's ability to maintain consistent tension and precision across every single knot. This high level of craftsmanship results in a dense, resilient pile that is designed to withstand daily use while preserving the integrity of the design motifs.

The weight of 10.5 kg for this 209 x 200 cm piece is a testament to the quality and density of the materials used. This weight reflects the substantial amount of wool required, ensuring that the rug stays firmly in place and offers a lasting, high-quality foundation for your home.
