Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black198 x 206 cm

Bokhara rugs are deeply rooted in the history of Central Asian nomadic traditions, though today the finest examples are primarily crafted in Pakistan. The style takes its name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, a historic hub where these distinct, highly prized carpets were once traded along the legendary caravan routes.

The term 2ply refers to the specific way the wool is prepared, where two individual strands are twisted together before the knots are tied. This technique is essential for quality, as it produces a more substantial, lustrous, and durable pile that feels exceptionally soft and stands up well to daily wear.

The visual language of the Bokhara is defined by its repetitive, balanced layout, most notably the gul motif. These elephant-foot or octagonal shapes are arranged in orderly rows across the field, framed by complex, stylized borders that reflect a long-standing commitment to symmetry and geometric harmony.

Owning a Bokhara is a way to connect with a rich, centuries-old legacy of artistry. These rugs are highly sought after by collectors and homeowners alike, not only for their striking aesthetic but for the incredible human effort and skill required to produce them, making each piece a tangible link to a storied craft tradition.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. Each individual knot is tied by hand, a labour-intensive process that ensures the pile is exceptionally dense and the finished surface is remarkably uniform.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the precision of the work is evident in the sharpness of the pattern and the structural integrity of the rug. This level of complexity is what allows the intricate floral and geometric details to appear so crisp and refined.

The combination of 250,000 knots per m2 and the high-quality wool pile creates a heavy, robust foundation that is built to endure. This investment in time and manual skill results in a durable piece that maintains its form and beauty even with regular use.
