Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black196 x 198 cm

The Bokhara rug tradition is deeply rooted in the history of Central Asia, taking its name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, which served as a vital hub for trade and craftsmanship. Over generations, these weaving techniques migrated and evolved, with Pakistan becoming one of the most respected centres for producing these rugs today. The artistry found in these pieces reflects a long-standing cultural dedication to preserving traditional motifs.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of Wool are twisted together before being knotted. This technique is significant because it results in a denser, more lustrous, and remarkably durable surface. For the owner, this means the rug not only feels softer and more luxurious to the touch but also possesses the strength to withstand daily life while retaining its rich colour and pile height.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their signature gul motifs, which are repeating octagonal or elephant-foot shapes arranged in rows across the field. These medallions are typically framed by elaborate, formal borders that mirror the symmetry of the centre. The deep red palette is a classic hallmark of the tradition, symbolising warmth and prosperity in the homes where they are placed.

Owning a piece from this tradition is about more than just floor decor; it is an appreciation of a heritage that values human skill and enduring quality. Collectors and home enthusiasts alike value these rugs for their ability to bring a sense of history and cultural weight into a modern setting. By acquiring a hand-knotted rug, you are participating in a legacy of craft that prioritises lasting beauty over fleeting trends.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to its creation. By tying each individual knot by hand, the weavers ensure a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that simply cannot be replicated by machines. With 250,000 knots per m2, this piece represents a significant investment of time and human skill.

The 9.7 kg weight of this 198 x 196 cm rug is a testament to the density of the Wool pile and the sturdy foundation used in its construction. This substantial material weight ensures the rug lays flat and resists wear, serving as evidence of the high-quality materials and rigorous labour invested in every square centimetre of the finished piece.
