Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Green / Dark yellow138 x 205 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road trading hub of Bukhara in Central Asia, where nomadic and town weavers first developed and perfected these distinctive patterns. Over generations, the tradition migrated southward into Pakistan, where local artisans embraced the craft and elevated the weaving of these classic carpets to an exceptional standard.

The 2ply designation in this rug means the pile is crafted using two strands of wool twisted together before knotting. This technique produces a significantly denser, more lustrous, and harder-wearing pile than single-ply construction, ensuring the rug withstands heavy use while maintaining its soft touch.

The visual language of the Bokhara tradition is defined by repeating gul motifs, which are octagonal or elephant-foot medallions arranged in neat rows across the field. While traditional Bokhara rugs are most commonly found in deep reds, this rare example features a striking green field, offering a fresh interpretation of a timeless design.

Owning a hand-knotted Pakistani Bokhara connects your home to centuries of textile heritage and human skill. It represents an investment in genuine craftsmanship and cultural longevity, making it a valued centrepiece for anyone who appreciates heritage and lasting quality.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Pakistan, following time-honoured traditions that require immense patience and manual precision. Working from traditional patterns, the weaver ties each individual knot by hand onto the loom to build the foundation of the piece.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, a rug of this 205 x 138 cm size contains hundreds of thousands of precisely placed knots. This painstaking process takes many months of dedicated daily work, resulting in a robust structure and a dense, supportive pile that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

Weighing 7.1 kg, the substantial construction reflects the generous amount of natural wool and labour invested in its creation. This careful density ensures superior longevity, allowing the rug to maintain its structural integrity and detailed pattern for generations.
