Bokhara 2plyHand KnottedRug

Brown / Red124 x 184 cm

Bokhara rugs take their name from the ancient Silk Road city of Bukhara, which served as a central hub for the trade of textiles and woven goods. While the name originates from this historical centre in Central Asia, the finest examples of these rugs have been produced in Pakistan for generations, where artisans have perfected the style to a world-class standard.

The term 2ply refers to the construction of the pile, where two strands of wool are twisted together before being knotted. This method is significant because it results in a denser, more lustrous, and remarkably durable pile. For the owner, this means a rug that not only feels softer and more substantial but also stands up better to the rigours of daily life.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their elegant, repeating gul motifs—often described as elephant-foot medallions—arranged in orderly rows. These symbols are deeply rooted in tribal tradition and are typically framed by elaborate, geometric borders. This particular rug honours these traditions while presenting the motifs with a clarity and refined colour palette that is characteristic of the best Pakistani weaving.

Collecting a rug from this tradition is an investment in cultural heritage and human skill. These pieces are valued for their ability to bring a sense of history and warmth into a home. By owning a piece like this, you are participating in a long-standing tradition of craft that prizes patience, precision, and the artistic expression of the weaver.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and patience. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this specific 184 x 124 cm piece represents hundreds of hours of dedicated labour by an expert artisan.

This high level of knot density is what gives the rug its exceptional durability and sharp, clear pattern definition. By investing in such a precisely crafted item, you are ensuring a dense, resilient pile that holds its shape and beauty over time, far exceeding the lifespan of mass-produced alternatives.

The 5.7 kg weight of this rug further speaks to the quality of the materials used and the tightness of the weave. Every knot is placed with intention, resulting in a robust, high-quality foundation that reflects a deep respect for traditional weaving techniques.
