Bidjar rugs originate from the Kurdish town of the same name in the Middle East. Often referred to as the Iron Rugs of the region, they are world-renowned for their incredible durability and robust construction. This reputation stems from the unique way they are woven, which results in a pile that is exceptionally dense and firm, making them a staple in homes that value both beauty and longevity.

The craft of these rugs is defined by a specific technique where the wool is packed tightly, creating a foundation that is almost impenetrable. This method produces a heavy, sturdy rug that feels substantial and rich underfoot. The quality of a Bidjar is often judged by this density, as it dictates not only the rug's lifespan but also its ability to maintain vibrant colours and crisp motifs through decades of use.

Visually, Bidjar rugs often feature a variation of the Herati pattern, a classic design consisting of a central flower enclosed by four leaves. This rug showcases these traditional motifs, framed by intricate, decorative borders that draw from centuries of regional design heritage. The use of a complex colour palette is a hallmark of the style, creating a look that is both ornate and deeply grounded in cultural history.

Collectors value these rugs for their combination of artistic expression and structural integrity. Owning a Bidjar is an opportunity to possess a piece of a storied craft tradition that has been refined over generations. It represents a commitment to enduring quality and a respect for the human skill required to transform raw materials into a piece of functional art that transcends changing trends.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill from the artisan. With a density of 360,000 knots per m2, the creation of this rug involves a significant investment of time and precision. This high knot count is the reason for the rug's exceptional durability and the sharp, defined clarity of its complex patterns.

The weight of 4 kg for this size is a testament to the heavy, dense construction of the piece. This physical weight signals the use of high-quality materials and a tightly packed foundation that ensures the rug will lay flat and hold its shape over time. Every knot is placed by hand, reflecting a level of labour that results in a superior, long-lasting product.
