Black / Brown63 x 89 cm

The Baluch rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes residing in the border regions of the Middle East. These tribes have a long-standing tradition of weaving, which has been passed down through generations, reflecting their unique cultural identity and the harsh, beautiful landscape they inhabit.

The term 'Baluch' refers to these specific tribal traditions, which are celebrated for their focus on quality and durability. The wool used is typically sourced from locally raised sheep, known for its soft yet sturdy texture, which is vital for nomadic life where rugs were often used as floor coverings, blankets, and bags.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their geometric and tribal motifs, often featuring diamonds, stars, and stylised floral elements arranged in a rhythmic, repeating fashion. The colour palette is traditionally grounded in deep, natural tones like dark blue, dark red, and brown, often derived from organic dyes that mellow beautifully with age.

Owning a Baluch rug is like holding a piece of living history. These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the skill required to produce such intricate designs without the use of modern technology. They represent a connection to a traditional way of life and a commitment to preserving ancient craft skills.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. By tying each individual knot by hand, the artisan creates a surface that is remarkably durable and firm, ensuring the rug maintains its shape and beauty over time.

The dense construction is evidenced by its substantial weight of 1.5 kg for its size, which indicates a high concentration of wool and a foundation built for longevity. This level of craftsmanship ensures that the intricate patterns remain sharp and clear, showcasing the precision of the weaver’s touch.

Creating a piece of this quality involves many hours of focused effort. The choice of materials and the hand-knotted technique result in a finished product that feels substantial and premium, reflecting the dedication poured into every centimetre of the surface.
