BaluchHand KnottedRug

Dark red / BlackRunner55 x 426 cm

The tradition of rug weaving associated with the Baluch people originates from the border regions between the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. These nomadic and semi-nomadic groups have long been renowned for their ability to create durable, expressive textiles that reflect their distinct cultural identity and the rugged landscapes they inhabit.

The term Baluch refers to these tribal origins, which are celebrated for their use of natural dyes and geometric compositions. The craft has evolved over centuries, with weavers developing techniques that balance portability with the need for a protective, insulating floor covering for tents and homes.

Signature design elements in this tradition often include repeating guls or octagonal medallions that tell a story of regional heritage. The borders are typically filled with intricate geometric patterns, framing the field and creating a cohesive, balanced look that is highly prized by collectors for its authenticity.

Owning a piece from this tradition is a way to connect with a storied craft history. These rugs are valued not just for their visual appeal, but for the skill and cultural narrative woven into every thread, representing a legacy of artistry that continues to be appreciated in homes across the world today.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill. Each individual knot is tied by hand onto the foundation, building the design row by row to create a finished piece that is both strong and flexible.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this runner represents a significant investment of time and human effort. This level of precision allows for the fine detail seen in the tribal patterns and ensures that the pile remains dense and resistant to wear over time.

The weight of 8.2 kg across its 426 x 55 cm dimensions speaks to the substantial amount of wool used in its construction. This weight is a hallmark of quality, indicating a sturdy build that provides a stable and secure feel on your floor.
