BaluchHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red170 x 280 cm

Beluch rugs take their name from the Baluchi people, a nomadic and semi-nomadic group whose traditional lands span across parts of Afghanistan and the wider Middle East. These rugs are deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of the region, serving as both functional floor coverings and expressions of tribal identity and storytelling.

The construction of these rugs is defined by their resilience and the use of high-quality materials. Traditionally, weavers utilise local wool, known for its natural lustre and durability, which is often dyed using rich, earthy pigments. This creates a dense, robust pile that is designed to withstand the rigours of nomadic life, reflecting a craft tradition that prioritises longevity.

Signature design elements of the Beluch tradition often include repeating geometric motifs and stylised floral patterns, frequently contained within complex, multi-layered borders. The colour palette is typically restrained, favouring deep reds, browns, and blacks that age beautifully over time, developing a rich patina that enhances the rug's visual depth.

These rugs are highly valued by collectors for their authenticity and the human story behind every knot. Owning a Beluch rug is an investment in a living tradition, a piece of heritage that represents the skill and cultural history of the weavers who created it. It is more than just a floor covering; it is a tangible piece of history.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of focused effort to each piece. The process involves tying thousands of individual knots to build the design layer by layer, ensuring a level of detail and structural integrity that is impossible to achieve with machinery.

With a weight of 12.9 kg across its 280 x 170 cm frame, this rug demonstrates the sheer volume of high-quality wool used in its creation. This density is a direct result of the labour-intensive hand-knotting process, which ensures the rug is durable enough to remain a centrepiece in your home for many years to come.

The precision required to execute the traditional motifs across such a large surface area speaks to the immense skill of the weaver. Every inch of this rug reflects a commitment to the craft, from the careful selection of fibres to the tension maintained during the knotting phase, resulting in a finished product of remarkable quality.
