Baluch FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark redRunner108 x 280 cm

The Baluch rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes living along the border regions of the Middle East. These weavers have a long-standing tradition of creating textiles that reflect their environment and cultural identity, often incorporating motifs passed down through generations of families.

The term Baluch refers to the tribal origins of these pieces, which are characterised by their deep, earthy colour palettes and intricate geometric designs. Historically, these rugs were created for practical, everyday use, such as floor coverings, tent decorations, or saddlebags, which is why they are renowned for their durability and sturdy construction.

Signature design elements of these rugs include the use of repeating geometric patterns, often featuring octagonal or diamond-shaped medallions. The borders are typically filled with stylised tribal motifs, creating a frame that complements the central field. These rugs are highly sought after by collectors for their authentic, non-commercial aesthetic that feels deeply rooted in tradition.

Owning a Baluch rug is an investment in a storied craft tradition. These pieces are valued not only for their visual appeal but also for the cultural weight they bring into a home. By selecting a rug from this tradition, you are continuing a cycle of appreciation for the skill and history of the nomadic weavers who developed this distinct style.

This runner is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and skill from the artisans. By placing each knot individually by hand, the weavers ensure that the pile is tight, consistent, and capable of holding its shape and pattern definition against the wear of everyday life.

Given the dimensions of 280 x 108 cm and the density of the knots, this piece represents hundreds of hours of focused human effort. The weight of 8.2 kg is a direct result of the high volume of wool used in the construction, signalling a level of density that provides both a premium feel and long-term structural integrity.

The foundation, made from sturdy cotton, provides the stable base necessary to support the dense wool pile, ensuring the rug remains flat and secure. This combination of materials and manual labour results in a runner that is not only visually striking but also built to withstand the demands of a busy home.
