Dark red / Black213 x 310 cm

The Bakhtiari region, located in the Zagros Mountains of the Middle East, is home to a storied nomadic and settled population with a long-standing tradition of weaving. These rugs are celebrated for their ability to blend the bold, rugged spirit of their mountain origins with the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the settled tribes.

Technically, the quality of a Bakhtiar rug is defined by its robust construction and the use of high-quality, durable wool. The term hand-knotted refers to the laborious process of tying individual strands of wool onto the foundation. This method is the hallmark of true quality, as it allows for intricate design work and ensures the rug can withstand generations of use while maintaining its structural integrity.

Visually, Bakhtiar rugs are often recognised for their use of bold, stylized floral motifs and complex geometric arrangements. While many follow a panel design, others feature more organic, flowing patterns that cover the entire field. The classic palette often relies on deep reds and blues, which were traditionally derived from natural plant and mineral dyes found in the region.

Collecting a piece from this tradition is an act of preserving a rich cultural legacy. These rugs are valued not just for their aesthetic beauty, but for the skill and heritage they represent. By choosing a Bakhtiar rug, you are connecting your home to a long lineage of artisans who have mastered the art of storytelling through their craft.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and a high degree of skill. By securing each knot individually to the foundation, the artisans ensure that the rug possesses remarkable durability and a fine, crisp definition in its complex floral patterns.

Given the substantial size of this piece, the creation process is a significant undertaking that spans many months of dedicated labour. The density of the knots is balanced perfectly with the weight of the piece, resulting in a robust and substantial rug that feels solid and well-made.

The commitment to traditional hand-knotting techniques means that every inch of this rug reflects the human touch. This level of craftsmanship is why the rug feels so consistent and high-quality, standing as a testament to the time and effort invested by the craftspeople who brought it to life.
