Aubusson - TappissereHand WovenRug

Brown / Orange250 x 316 cm

The Aubusson style finds its roots in the town of Aubusson in central France, where workshops gained fame in the 17th and 18th centuries for creating flat-woven rugs and tapestries. These works were commissioned by royalty and the aristocracy, known for their neoclassical designs and painterly floral arrangements.

While the original French pieces were often woven as wall hangings or floor coverings for grand chateaus, the style has evolved significantly. Today, master weavers in regions like China draw upon these historical archives to create versions that honour the original aesthetic while adapting to modern home environments.

The signature design elements of this tradition include the use of central medallions, delicate floral wreaths, and elaborate scrollwork borders. The colours are typically kept in a refined palette, often utilising soft creams and deep, grounding tones to create a sense of balanced, formal beauty that has remained popular for centuries.

Owning an Aubusson-inspired rug is about connecting to a lineage of fine textile art. It represents a dedication to classical design principles and the preservation of a decorative language that prioritises symmetry, elegance, and the enduring appeal of botanical motifs.

This rug is meticulously hand-woven, a process that requires immense focus and steady hands. Because each thread is placed individually by the weaver, the resulting piece possesses a structural integrity that machine-made alternatives lack.

The creation of this specific rug involves careful attention to the tension of the weave, ensuring the floral patterns remain crisp and clearly defined across its large surface area. This level of manual precision is what allows for such fine detail within the complex motifs.

Given the substantial size of 316 x 250 cm and its weight of 7.9 kg, the production of this rug represents a significant investment of time and human skill. Each session at the loom builds upon the last, resulting in a durable and thoughtfully constructed floor covering that is built to endure.
