Aubusson - TappissereHand WovenRug

Brown / Orange181 x 287 cm

The Aubusson style draws its name from the historic French town of the same name, which became world-renowned for its tapestry production starting in the 17th century. While originally associated with wall-hung tapestries, the aesthetic eventually transitioned into floor coverings, characterised by their flat-weave construction and intricate, painterly designs.

The artistry behind these pieces is rooted in the tradition of replicating oil paintings and garden scenes through weaving. By using a flat-weave technique, the artisans were able to achieve remarkable detail, allowing for the soft shading and realistic floral motifs that have become the signature of the Aubusson look.

The design of this rug features the classic medallion and floral spray motifs that define the genre. These elements are often framed by ornate borders and trellis patterns, a design language that was popular in European aristocratic homes. The use of a vibrant red field provides a striking contrast to the delicate cream floral accents, creating a visual depth that is both regal and welcoming.

Today, rugs created in this style are highly prized by collectors and homeowners who appreciate the intersection of fine art and functional decor. Owning a piece in this tradition is an invitation to celebrate centuries of design evolution, where the skill of the weaver remains the most vital component in preserving a legacy of beauty and refinement.

This piece is meticulously hand-woven, a traditional process that demands patience and a steady hand. By avoiding mechanical looms, the artisans ensure that every thread is placed with purpose, resulting in a finish that carries the distinct character and warmth of a handmade object.

With a total weight of 5.2 kg, this rug demonstrates the deliberate density of its construction. The weight reflects the substantial amount of high-quality Wool used to create the intricate pattern, ensuring that the piece retains its structural integrity and visual clarity over many years of use.

The commitment to traditional weaving techniques allows for the sharp definition of the floral motifs seen across the surface. This labour-intensive approach is what gives the rug its premium feel and lasting durability, representing hours of focused effort that results in a finished product of exceptional character.
