ArdebilHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black137 x 201 cm

The Ardebil tradition is deeply rooted in the history of the Middle East, taking its name from the city of Ardebil in the northwestern region. This area has long been a hub for textile artistry, famous for producing some of the most celebrated and historically significant rugs in the world.

Ardebil designs are characterised by their formal, sophisticated layouts, often featuring complex geometric or floral motifs that require a high degree of technical skill to execute. The balance between the field and the border is a key indicator of quality, reflecting a long-standing tradition of symmetry and order that has been perfected over generations.

The visual language of these rugs often centres on repeating patterns that create a sense of rhythm and depth. You will often find distinct, medallion-like shapes or intricate vine-work that draws the eye, showcasing a mastery of colour and form that has defined the regional aesthetic for centuries.

Owning an Ardebil rug is more than just a decor choice; it is an appreciation of cultural heritage. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their blend of artistic vision and functional durability, serving as a tangible link to a rich history of craft that continues to inspire admiration today.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a traditional process that requires immense focus and patience. By tying each individual knot by hand onto the cotton foundation, artisans create a finished piece that is significantly more durable and structurally sound than mass-produced alternatives.

With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, this rug represents hundreds of hours of dedicated labour. This level of precision allows for the sharp, clear definition of the intricate patterns you see across the surface, ensuring that the design remains crisp and clear for decades of use.

The substantial weight of 9.4 kg across its 201 x 137 cm frame is a testament to the generous amount of high-quality wool used in its construction. This weight not only provides a luxurious, heavy drape but also indicates a dense, tightly packed pile that will retain its shape and texture under regular use.
