Antique Keshan Debir ca.1900Hand KnottedRug

Brown / Dark red321 x 422 cm

Keshan sits on the historic trade routes of the Middle East, a city renowned for producing some of the finest floor coverings in the region. The tradition of weaving in this area stretches back centuries, drawing on a rich heritage of artistic expression that flourished under the Safavid dynasty and continued to evolve into the modern era.

The Debir designation within Keshan history often points to workshop traditions associated with master designers who produced exceptional urban carpets. These workshops maintained rigorous standards, employing traditional techniques to ensure each creation met the high expectations of royal and aristocratic patrons.

The visual language of this tradition typically features a central medallion surrounded by flowing floral arabesques and intricate vine scrolls, all enclosed by heavily detailed borders. The balance of the field design reflects a deep understanding of symmetry and proportion, hallmarks of classical Middle Eastern weaving.

Collecting a piece from this tradition means acquiring a tangible piece of textile heritage. The combination of historical depth, fine materials, and skilled craftsmanship makes these rugs valued heirlooms that continue to captivate collectors and design enthusiasts alike.

Crafted entirely by hand through traditional hand-knotted techniques, this rug represents months of dedicated human labour. Artisans tied approximately 2,166,720 individual knots across the 422 by 321 cm foundation to bring the intricate design to life.

The meticulous knotting process requires exceptional skill and patience, resulting in a dense 50.1 kg construction that speaks to the high volume of natural materials and effort invested. Such precise handwork ensures the pattern remains sharp and the pile retains its supportive feel through decades of use.
