The Afshar Shahre Babak rugs originate from the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of the Middle East, particularly within the Kerman province. These rugs are deeply connected to the cultural identity of the Afshar people, who have historically travelled across the region, bringing with them a distinct visual language that has evolved over centuries to reflect their environment and tribal heritage.
The term 'Shahre Babak' refers to a specific region known for producing some of the most sought-after examples of this style. These rugs are highly regarded for their robust construction, which utilises high-quality wool and a tight knotting technique that creates a durable, long-lasting product capable of withstanding the rigours of nomadic life, a quality that makes them excellent choices for modern homes.
Visually, these rugs are defined by their use of iconic motifs, most notably the boteh or paisley, which is often arranged in structured, repeating rows across the field. The border work is typically elaborate, featuring geometric patterns that frame the central design with a sense of formality, often utilising a palette of deep blues and earthy neutrals that provide a sophisticated contrast.
Owning an Afshar Shahre Babak rug is an invitation to celebrate a living tradition of craftsmanship. Collectors and enthusiasts value these pieces for their authenticity and the human story behind every knot. By incorporating one into your home, you are preserving a piece of tribal history and supporting a legacy of skill that remains vital to the artistic landscape of the Middle East.
