Afshar ca. 1930Hand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red127 x 176 cm

Afshar rugs originate from the tribal and village weaving traditions of southern Persia where nomadic and settled groups have practised the craft for generations. These weavers are known for drawing on deep cultural memories incorporating geometric layouts and repeating motifs that reflect their surrounding landscapes and tribal heritage.

The construction relies on time-honoured techniques passed down through families utilising durable cotton foundations paired with resilient wool piles. This traditional method ensures the finished textile withstands daily wear while maintaining a supple and inviting texture.

Signature design elements often include striking geometric medallions, stylized floral patterns, and structured borders that frame the central field. In this particular piece traditional motifs are rendered with a distinct artistic rhythm showcasing the expressive visual vocabulary typical of the Afshar tradition.

Owning an antique piece from this region connects your home to a rich lineage of textile artistry. It represents not just a floor covering but a durable work of cultural heritage that honours the patience and skill of its maker.

This rug has been meticulously hand knotted by skilled artisans who dedicate months of careful labour to bring each pattern to life. With a density of 90,000 knots per m2 approximately 201,312 individual knots are tied by hand across the 176 x 127 cm surface.

This high level of knotting creates a dense and durable pile that locks the wool fibres firmly in place ensuring the rug retains its structural integrity and sharp design details for generations. The substantial weight of 5.6 kg further reflects the dense construction and generous amount of material invested in its creation.
