Each thread in this runner carries the story of its origin, reflecting the long-standing weaving traditions of the Middle East. Owning this piece means bringing a slice of cultural heritage into your home, resulting in a living space that feels personal, curated, and deeply comfortable.

Kilim rugs represent one of the oldest and most respected weaving traditions across the Middle East and Central Asia. Historically, these flat-woven textiles were crafted by nomadic tribes as versatile, portable floor coverings, blankets, and storage sacks, reflecting a lifestyle defined by movement and adaptability.

The term 'kilim' refers specifically to the tapestry-weave technique, where no pile is created. Instead, the coloured weft threads are woven tightly over the warp threads to produce the design. This method results in a durable, reversible rug that is lightweight yet incredibly strong, prized for its clean lines and graphic clarity.

The visual language of Afghan kilims is deeply rooted in tribal identity. This runner features a classic striped pattern interspersed with stylized geometric motifs. These patterns often serve as symbolic shorthand for the weaver’s environment and heritage, with colours traditionally derived from natural plant and mineral dyes that have aged gracefully over time.

Today, these rugs are highly sought after by collectors who value authenticity and the human element of craft. Choosing a vintage kilim is an investment in cultural history, offering a unique opportunity to own a piece that has been part of a living tradition, bringing both soul and narrative to a contemporary home.

This runner is meticulously hand-woven, a traditional craft that relies entirely on the skill and precision of the weaver. Unlike machine-made alternatives, this process involves passing individual strands of Wool through the foundation, creating a durable, tight-knit textile that is built to withstand years of use.

With a substantial weight of 11 kg, this rug demonstrates the sheer density of the Wool and the labour-intensive nature of its creation. The weight is a clear indicator of the generous amount of material used and the time invested by the artisan to achieve such a robust, high-quality finish.

The process of hand-weaving a runner of this size is a slow, thoughtful endeavour that requires immense focus to maintain the consistency of the pattern. This dedication to craft ensures that the final result is not only visually balanced but structurally sound, offering a level of longevity that factory-produced rugs simply cannot match.

Wool

They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean.
