Owning this rug means possessing a piece of Middle Eastern craft tradition that has been preserved over time. As a unique item, it serves as a conversation starter, adding a layer of warmth and cultural depth to your space that mass-produced alternatives simply cannot match.

The tradition of weaving flat-weave rugs, known as kilims, is deeply embedded in the nomadic cultures of the Middle East. These textiles were historically essential to daily life, serving as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags, designed to be both portable and highly durable.

The term kilim refers to the specific technique of interlocking the weft threads with the warp threads, which creates a rug without a pile. This method results in a lightweight yet strong fabric that is highly valued for its versatility and the clarity of its geometric patterns.

Visual language in Middle Eastern kilims often centres on bold, minimalist motifs such as stripes, diamonds, or zig-zags, which are frequently executed in rich, vegetable-dyed colours. These designs have evolved over centuries, reflecting the migration patterns and artistic influences of the various tribal groups throughout the region.

Collecting vintage pieces like this runner allows you to preserve a piece of living history. These rugs are highly regarded for their honest craftsmanship and the way they bridge the gap between ancient utility and modern interior design, making them prized possessions for those who value heritage and authenticity.

This runner is entirely hand-woven, a process that requires patience and a high level of skill. Unlike machine-made rugs, each pass of the shuttle is guided by hand, resulting in a flat, durable textile that showcases the subtle variations inherent in human-made work.

The substantial weight of 9.3 kg for its size speaks to the density of the weave and the generous amount of Wool used in its construction. This level of material investment ensures that the rug remains stable on the floor and retains its structural integrity for years to come.

Every aspect of this piece reflects a commitment to traditional craft, from the tension of the weave to the careful finishing of the edges. By choosing a hand-woven runner, you are supporting a legacy of artistry that prioritises quality and longevity over rapid production.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.
