Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black76 x 122 cm

Khal Mohammadi rugs hold a unique place in the history of Afghan weaving, developed by a master dyer and weaver named Khal Mohammadi in northern Afghanistan. Unlike many traditional styles named after specific nomadic tribes, this category represents a refined design standard known for its deep, lustrous red tones.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using high-quality local wool, which is renowned for its strength and natural sheen. The wool is carefully dyed using traditional techniques to achieve the characteristic warm red shades that define the style, ensuring the colours remain vibrant and deep over time.

The visual language of a Khal Mohammadi rug is characterised by repeating geometric medallions, often referred to as göls, arranged in structured rows. These central motifs are framed by intricate, multi-layered borders featuring delicate floral and tribal patterns in dark blue, creating a balanced and harmonious composition.

For collectors and homeowners alike, owning an Afghan Khal Mohammadi rug means bringing a piece of living cultural heritage into the home. These rugs are highly valued for their robust construction, rich colour palette, and the exceptional skill required to balance such detailed geometric symmetry.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, a process requiring immense patience and precision. Every single knot is placed individually by hand, representing hours of dedicated craftsmanship that no machine can replicate.

With a weight of 2.9 kg for its compact 122 x 76 cm size, this rug has a solid, dense structure. This weight reflects the generous amount of wool used and the tightness of the weave, ensuring the rug lies flat on your floor and maintains its shape over time.
