Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Red / Beige197 x 290 cm

The Khal Mohammadi rug takes its name from the legendary Afghan weaver who first developed this specific style. Originating from the northern regions of Afghanistan, these rugs have become synonymous with the enduring traditions of Middle Eastern carpet weaving, where craft is passed down through generations.

The construction of these rugs typically involves using a robust foundation that supports a dense, resilient pile. This technical approach is essential for achieving the deep, lustrous finish that distinguishes these rugs from others, providing both a luxurious feel and the structural integrity needed for high-traffic areas.

Visually, these rugs are celebrated for their rich, deep red tones and formal, repeating floral motifs. The designs often incorporate subtle variations in shade and pattern, which are characteristic of the hand-crafted nature of the work. The borders are usually detailed and formal, framing the central field to create a harmonious and balanced composition.

Collecting an Afghan Khal Mohammadi is an opportunity to own a piece of living history. These rugs are highly valued for their authenticity and the skill involved in their production, representing a cultural heritage that remains vibrant today. Owning one is a commitment to quality and a celebration of the artisan spirit.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a labour-intensive process that requires immense patience and skill. Each knot is placed by hand, creating a dense and resilient pile that is significantly more durable and detailed than machine-made alternatives.

With a total weight of 17.7 kg across its generous surface area, this rug reflects the significant amount of premium material and time invested in its creation. This density is a testament to the artisan's dedication, resulting in a robust structure that maintains its shape and appearance over time.

The precision required to execute the complex floral patterns across the entire field demonstrates the high level of craft involved. This level of detail is only possible through traditional hand-knotting, ensuring that each motif remains sharp and well-defined, contributing to the overall longevity and value of the piece.
