Afghan Khal MohammadiHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black145 x 196 cm

Khal Mohammadi rugs hold a unique place in Afghan weaving history, named after the legendary master dyer and weaver Khal Mohammadi. Developed in northern Afghanistan, this style is celebrated for its innovative dye techniques and robust construction, representing a modern classic within the region's rich textile heritage.

The signature of a true Khal Mohammadi lies in its deep, lustrous red tones, achieved through specialised, traditional dyeing methods. Weavers use high-quality wool to ensure the pile absorbs the rich pigments evenly, resulting in a resilient and vibrant surface that matures beautifully over time.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their structured geometric layouts, often featuring repeating medallions known as guls, framed by detailed, multi-layered borders. The interplay of deep reds with dark blue and ochre accents creates a balanced, sophisticated composition that is both traditional and highly adaptable to different interiors.

Owning an Afghan Khal Mohammadi is more than just having a decorative floor covering, it is an appreciation of a living craft tradition. These rugs are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their durability, rich colour depth, and the distinct cultural heritage they bring into contemporary living spaces.

Every detail of this rug is the result of dedicated human effort, created through the traditional hand-knotting technique in Afghanistan. Skilled artisans tie each individual knot by hand, a demanding process that requires immense patience, precision, and years of training to master.

Weighing 8.8 kg for its 196 x 145 cm size, the substantial weight of this piece reflects the density of its wool pile and the solid construction of its cotton warp. This physical density ensures the rug lies flat on your floor and maintains its structural integrity through years of use, representing months of dedicated craftsmanship.
