Black / Dark redRunner79 x 283 cm

The Afghan Akhche rug tradition is deeply rooted in the northern regions of Afghanistan, where nomadic and village weavers have practiced their craft for centuries. These rugs are celebrated for their robust construction and deep, warm colour palettes, reflecting the rugged landscapes and cultural heritage of the weavers.

The term Akhche refers to a specific regional style of weaving known for its durability and traditional design language. Woven using local wool, these rugs are built to withstand the demands of daily life while retaining their soft texture and rich appearance for decades.

The design of this runner features the classic elephant-foot gul, a repeating octagonal medallion that is a hallmark of Afghan weaving. These geometric motifs are arranged in an ordered sequence along the field, framed by detailed borders that showcase the weaver's eye for symmetry and balance.

Owning an Afghan Akhche rug is an appreciation of living history and nomadic artistry. Each piece tells a story of cultural identity and craftsmanship, making it a highly valued addition for collectors and homeowners who appreciate textiles with real cultural depth.

This runner is hand-knotted by skilled weavers in Afghanistan, using techniques passed down through generations. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, requiring immense patience, precision, and hours of dedicated craftsmanship to complete a single piece.

With a density of 90,000 knots per m2, this runner contains over 200,000 individually hand-tied knots across its surface. This high level of knotting precision ensures that the traditional geometric patterns remain sharp and clear, while also creating a dense, durable pile that resists flattening under daily use.

Weighing 6.9 kg, the substantial weight of this runner reflects the abundance of high-quality wool used in its construction. This heavy, dense build ensures the rug lies flat and secure on your floor, offering lasting durability that justifies its status as a premium, handcrafted investment.
