Black / Dark red79 x 117 cm

The Afghan Akhche rug tradition finds its roots in the northern regions of Afghanistan. These rugs are deeply connected to the nomadic and semi-nomadic heritage of local tribes, who have utilised wool from their own flocks for generations to create durable textiles that serve as both insulation and decoration in their homes.

The term Akhche refers to a specific regional style known for its sturdy construction and classic, bold design language. These rugs are typically built with a durable foundation, ensuring they can withstand the demands of daily life while retaining their aesthetic appeal. The use of traditional dyes often results in the deep, rich colours that have become a hallmark of this category.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their geometric precision, often featuring repeating medallions and intricate borders that draw inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape and historical cultural motifs. While they honour ancient design principles, each rug is an individual interpretation, with weavers often incorporating subtle variations that reflect their personal touch and the specific environment in which they work.

Owning an Afghan Akhche rug is a way to preserve and support a craft that has been passed down through centuries. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts alike for their authentic connection to Middle Eastern heritage and their ability to bring a sense of grounded, human history into a contemporary living space.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by experienced artisans who dedicate significant time to every single knot. This labour-intensive process ensures that the pile is securely anchored, resulting in a dense and long-lasting construction that is far superior to mass-produced alternatives.

With a total weight of 2.9 kg for its size, this rug demonstrates a high density of material that speaks to the patience and skill invested in its creation. Every section of the pattern is carefully executed by hand, ensuring that the final result is both sharp and resilient.
