Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark redRunner78 x 251 cm

Afghan Akhche rugs originate from the northern regions of Afghanistan, where weaving has been a central part of nomadic and village life for centuries. These rugs are deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of the Turkmen tribes, who have passed down their design sensibilities and weaving skills through generations.

The Fine designation in Afghan weaving refers to the careful selection of high-quality wool and the precision of the hand-knotting process. This attention to detail results in a more defined pattern and a denser, more lustrous pile that naturally resists wear and retains its rich colour over time.

Characterised by the iconic gul or elephant's foot medallion, the design of this runner features repeating octagonal motifs enclosed by detailed geometric borders. Traditionally rendered in deep reds, terracottas, and dark blues or blacks, these patterns represent family crests and tribal symbols, carrying centuries of storytelling within their geometric lines.

Owning an Afghan runner is an appreciation of living history and enduring craftsmanship. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their robust character, rich cultural narrative, and the warm, inviting atmosphere they bring to modern and traditional spaces.

This runner is entirely hand-knotted using traditional techniques that require immense patience and skill. Every single knot is tied by hand by a skilled artisan, representing weeks of dedicated work to transform raw wool into a finished piece of art.

Weighing 6.1 kg for its 251 x 78 cm size, the runner has a substantial, heavy feel that reflects the density and quality of its construction. This weight is a direct result of the generous amount of wool packed tightly into the weave, ensuring the runner lies flat and secure on your floor.

The combination of hand-knotting and natural wool fibres creates a highly durable structure that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match. This traditional construction method ensures the pile remains resilient, recovering easily from foot traffic and maintaining its structural integrity for decades.
