Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Dark yellow / Black192 x 305 cm

Afghan Akhche rugs have a long history rooted in the northern regions of Afghanistan, where Turkmen weavers have passed down their skills through generations. These rugs are celebrated for their robust construction and deep, warm colour palettes, which traditionally featured rich reds but have evolved to include sophisticated dark blues and neutrals.

The term Fine in Afghan weaving denotes a higher level of care and precision in the knotting process. By using carefully spun wool, weavers are able to create clearer patterns and a more durable pile that stands up to decades of use while retaining its soft, lustrous surface.

This piece showcases the classic Akhche design, characterised by repeating octagonal medallions, often referred to as elephant-foot guls. Framed by detailed geometric borders, these motifs create a balanced, rhythmic pattern that brings structure and visual harmony to the entire composition.

Owning an Afghan rug is about appreciating a living craft tradition. Each piece carries the cultural heritage of its weavers, making it a valued acquisition for those who appreciate the patience, skill, and history woven into every single thread.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled weavers, a traditional method that requires immense patience and precision. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, creating a structurally sound piece that machine-made alternatives simply cannot match.

With a substantial weight of 18.2 kg spread across its 305 x 192 cm size, the rug demonstrates a dense and robust construction. This weight indicates a generous use of high-quality wool and a tight weave, ensuring the pile remains upright and resilient under daily use.

The creation of a hand-knotted rug of this scale represents months of dedicated work. The physical effort and artisanal skill required to maintain uniform tension and pattern alignment across more than five square metres make this rug a clear demonstration of human craftsmanship.
