Afghan FineHand KnottedRug

Black / Dark red185 x 275 cm

The tradition of Afghan Akhche weaving is deeply rooted in the heritage of northern Afghanistan, where nomadic and semi-nomadic Turkmen weavers have passed down their skills through generations. These rugs are celebrated for their honest, robust character, reflecting the rugged landscapes and resilient spirit of the region.

The designation of an Afghan rug as Fine points to the careful selection of wool and the clarity of its traditional patterns. Woven with a dense pile, these pieces are designed for longevity, showcasing how traditional methods yield rugs that are both highly functional and visually striking.

At the heart of this design is the classic gul motif, a repeating octagonal medallion that has served as a tribal crest for centuries. Framed by geometric borders, these symbols are set against a rich, dark red field, creating a balanced composition that is instantly recognisable to rug enthusiasts.

Owning an Afghan Akhche rug connects your home to an ancient lineage of craftsmanship. Highly valued for their warm colour palettes and enduring build, these rugs are sought after by those who appreciate authentic tribal art and the human story woven into every thread.

This exceptional rug is entirely hand-knotted by skilled artisans in Afghanistan, using techniques that require immense patience and precision. Every single knot is tied individually by hand, creating a structural integrity and character that no machine can ever replicate.

With a substantial weight of 15.8 kg for its 275 x 185 cm size, this rug demonstrates a remarkably dense and heavy construction. This abundance of hand-knotted wool translates directly into a sturdy, hard-wearing pile that lies flat on the floor and resists shifting, ensuring it stands up beautifully to the demands of everyday life.

The creation of a piece this size represents months of dedicated daily labor. From preparing the wool to the final shearing, the entire process is guided by human hands, making the finished rug a tangible testament to the artisan's expertise and dedication.
