200 x 250 rugs: A practical size for stylish homes

If you’re looking for a rectangular rug that’s big enough to define a space without overpowering it, a 200 x 250 rug is spot on. This size is perfect for medium and large rooms where you want comfort, colour and warmth all in one. It works well under a coffee table in a living room, at the foot of a bed or under a dining table where chairs need to move easily without leaving the rug’s edge.

Frequently asked questions

A 200 x 250 rug works well in living rooms, double bedrooms and dining rooms seating four to six. It’s large enough to bring a seating area together or sit under a dining table, without needing an extra-large floor.

It depends on your table size. As a rule of thumb, allow 60–70 cm of rug on each side of the table so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. That makes 200 x 250 a good match for a four-to-six-seat table; for a larger six-to-eight-seat table, 200 x 300 cm rugs can work better.

Yes. A 200 x 250 rug placed lengthways gives a double bed a border of roughly 40–50 cm on each side and at the foot, so the rug frames the bed rather than disappearing under it.

A 200 x 250 wool rug is the most common choice at this size — durable, warm and naturally stain-resistant. Flatweave constructions are the lowest-maintenance option and suit busy rooms; high-pile options adds a softer, plusher feel; hand-knotted pieces are the most hard-wearing and each one is unique.
